SEO is NOT Spam!
Nov
Matt Cutts, head of Google's Webspam team, published a video last week to officially clarify the search engine’s position about SEO and spam.
To the question "Does Google consider SEO to be spam?”, he clearly replies: NO. And he even underlines that contrary to what some may believe, SEO is actually positive for the web since it improves the quality, the searchability, as well as the usability of a website.
According to Matt, Search Engine Optimization is actually about making sure that your web pages are well represented within search engines when your topic is searched.
And as the job of search engines is to return the best possible search results, search engine optimization helps Google better understand web pages.
Optimizing your website for search engines makes you improve your website's architecture, speed, crawlability, navigation, and many more. Besides, by selecting the right keywords your target market searches, it brings more qualified traffic to your website, and therefore helps you convert more leads into customers.
In the end, both users and search engines benefit of SEO.
However, search engines are not as smart as people, so Matt also warns that there are users employing illegitimate techniques (known as black hat SEO) but Google strives to eliminate this spam.

In the end, Matt recommends you to find good SEO professionals whom "you can trust and who will explain what they do".
