There are now more than 196 million domain names in the world according to a new study released by Internet infrastructure firm VeriSign.

During Q2 2010, 3 million additional domain names have been registered. It's a 2% increase compared to Q1 2010 and a 7% increase compared to Q2 2009.

Most popular domain names are ".com" and ".net" which both account for more than 100 million of all TLDs.

China's ccTLD ".cn" is the sixth most popular with almost 8 million registrations due to heavy registration restrictions.

Even though .cn has stagnated (due to the new restrictions), .com and the new .co domain will surely see a further increase in the number of domains. More than 500.000 .co domains have already been registered in 2 months!
