And they are not being quiet about it!
The Chinese Mobile and Telecommunications Giant is hoping to be the number one smartphone company in the world, overtaking Apple and Samsung. Considering it is already a leader in the infrastructure we all depend on to share information, the firm now is making its move into the consumers market.
Because I have the uncanny psychic ability to see straight into the future, I can safely tell you that Huawei will reach their goal, become world leaders and subsequently rule over everything else in the world. The End. *Rolling Credits*
What's the Plan?
It has become clear from listening to Huawei Devices Chief Executive Wan Biao that the company is attempting to develop a community around its customers. Not unlike what Apple has developed since the launch of the iPod many moons ago.
The Chief Executive hopes the company will have reached top 3 smartphone makers in the world 5 years from now, he even makes a claim they might make it to number 1. His theory being that 5 years ago, Samsung were not that big and now look where they are.
Challenges ahead
The greatest, and most obvious, obstacle to Huawei's rise on the international scene is its brand recognition, or lack thereof. Indeed, the company has very little momentum in Europe and the US when it comes to its name. Although China now has taken to buying the phones and numbers suggests the company has sold over a million units of its Ascend P1 phone in the last 3 months.
In the UK today, most operators offer one of the Huawei phones to customers as part of a contract deal. Although this does not mean that the public will definitely take to these new phones and may still stick to what they know in the form of iPhones and Samsung handsets.
Part of the their 5 year strategy propably should involve a larger promotional push into these large smartphone markets.
Distinguishing features
The Huawei phones are meant to be the fastest 4G smartphones in the world. They have the edge in this area as they control the telecommunications side as well as the handsets. Obviously, this is only relevant if countries have a 4G network to speak of (hear that MIIT?) but if the company is looking into the future, this could hold it in good steed over other companies.
Furthermore, the phones are equipped with an "infinity screen" which vaguely reminds one of infinity pools in luxury resorts. What it means is that the screen wraps around the sides of the phone, thus giving the impression of a screen that goes on for infinity.
As of now, Huawei has taken to using Google Android operating system. However, they have not discounted the idea of using other operating systems should these prove more beneficial.
"Make It Possible"
As their slogan suggests, Huawei are pushing into every segment of the market and hope to develop phones at the high end to counter iPhone as well as the middle-market customers and entry level.
At the moment, 10% of the company's revenue goes into R&D - they are also the company that has applied for the largest number of patents in 2012. Huawei is pushing at full speed into the future and stand a good chance to be one of the smartphone leaders of the next generation.
