China Facebook

Jul

China facebook. Today, Facebook and twitter, probably because of what's going on on the west side of the country, are blocked in china. I am not going to discuss the politics behind this. This is a blog about search engine optimization, and internet marketing, so i am going to stick to that... but don't think i am heartless or I don't care about what is going on.

1) Now imagine you are in shanghai, or beijing, and you run your company on facebook (with a facebook app), well, as long as facebook is blocked, then you have 0 turn over...

2) they want to stop spreading the information... but i am wondering if by blocking facebook, they don't actually boost the spread of information, because the whole world is going to speak about facebook being blocked!

3) Often, people think that china is blocking facebook to stop information broadcasting abroad. actually I think that the main reason is for chinese in china. this is the most important part they need to control... so why don't they stop xiaonei, a facebook copy in china!?

Well, let's hope facebook is going to be accessible again in china in few hours, because it's also a tool for my business...

Edit: we are on the 24 of july, and facebook is till blocked in china. It's probably going to be blocked until october 1st 2009, for the 60th anniversary of the creation of the "People's Republic of China".

#1 This truly sucks... or does it???

Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 07/08/2009 - 10:05.

Facebook is down, Youtube has been down for the better part of a year, I can't access my blog or my families blogs to see pictures of my loved ones across the globe and even google search engine has been on and off throughout most of today.

Facebook is where people go to find out whats going on in this city, and probably all over the globe. I have many friends that need facebook to get their work done.

So for those of you that need this website to survive and to keep your companies flourishing I am sorry, but as for me this has all made me realize how much time i waste on the web.

This global Facebook addiction, really just makes me want to get out of the cities and off the grid for a while. Maybe I'll go drive a tractor on the farm, herd some cattle, plant some trees and reconnect with mother nature to get my senses of what's important back in check!

#2 Yes it sucks, thanks very much

Of course if your company is web-based you will lose business. And nobody personally needs a website to survive.

However, the point is Facebook is a tool we use to communicate. It makes it easier to share information with your loved ones on the other side of the planet.

To live in a foreign environment can be a wonderful, exhilarating experience - it can also be long, long way from home, which brings other emotions with it.

Don't get me wrong, I love connecting with nature and totally appreciate your Taoist stance. I too have a similar innate leaning. However I also embrace the Zen and wish to live in society and yet be 'not totally of it'. It is through the Internet that communication is afforded a natural, easy channel to express our ideas and feelings. Yes the phone is wonderful also, but a picture paints a thousand words.

Everyone will face their own demons as far as time-wasting net addiction goes. Let them learn as you and I have both done. But give people the chance to decide. Do not take the choice away from people.

And certainly no-one should take away an avenue of communication with loved ones, family and friends. It is a power-tripping, heinous act. So all due karma to those who do.

Power should be wielded by the wise. Not by the fearful and scared.

Balance your view - 'global Facebook addiction' is a spurious hyperbole.

Yesterday I swam with my friends, played cards, visited a temple in the country, made new friends, but last night I still couldn't tell all my old friends back home about it...

#3 give us back the access to Facebook in china

Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 07/09/2009 - 16:49.

see the thing is that we are foreign students in China, and the ONLY and EASY way we have to keep contact with home and friends... i don't know who want's to communicate through Facebook for what's happening in the west side, but they will do it more effectively through xiaonei without any questioning...so why do the authorities being so stupid ?????
please give back Facebook to kids like us...after all we just want to play a game and keep in touch with family !

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 07/27/2009 - 09:09.

i really don't understand why they blocked it;
seriously i live away from my home country for 3 years and one of the only ways to communicate with my friends back home is through facebook, and now what?
first youtube.. okay we lived with that.. but now facebook? what else? internet explorer?
i mean even twitter! and blogspot.. what did THAT have to do with it?

it's not like if we go on facebook the world is doomed.
im so sick of this

I agreed with you all..

still cannot understand that facebook has been blocked. for the first time I came to china, Istill can surf youtube and blogs.

I find that, if that homepage has bad thing to see, they will block the whole page. but I wonder, what is the bad thing in facebook, this homepage is no different with xiaonei. Now I lose my friends..

hopefully it can be open soon..

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 04/23/2010 - 09:36.

I went to China last year to experience the whole of China's 60th anniversary festivities.... And at the first time I thought that the internet connection at my hotel was bad or Facebook might have some maintenance.....
Is it still banned in China now?
